Welcome! #

At its core, Narrative Medicine proposes that a patient and their illness are a story – one with characters, deep relationships, and obscured motivations. Like other skills in medicine, the ability to understand a patient’s narrative is one that can be taught.

The VUMC Medical Humanities GME certificate program was founded in 2022 to do just that.

Now in its third year, the MedHum Certificate program has reached over thirty residents and fellows across all specialties at Vanderbilt. Through hands-on experience and seminars in Narrative medicine, oral history, and history of medicine, trainees foster the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to become physician-writers and to better attend to the care of their patients, both in and outside the walls of the hospital.

This website is a repository for course materials and submitted writing from our learners.
